Abstract
In the prepn. of a catalyst contg. oxides of Mo and of Fe, for oxidn. of methanol to HCHO, a ppte. is obtd. from an aq. medium contg. a sol. Mo cpd. and a sol. ferric salt, the ppte. is sepd. from the mother liquor, the ppte. is washed with de-ionised water, and is processed to an active catalyst, the mother liquor and the wash water are contacted with a weak anion-exchange resin which has been converted to the salt form with an acid, and the Mo ions adhering to the resin are recovered as an aq. alkali molybdate soln. by treating the resin with an aq. soln. of an alkali hydroxide. The Mo is recovered from the wash-water, contg. up to 1000 mg of Mo/litre. The ammonium ion content of the wash-water is lowered to below 0.05 mg/kg. The alkali molybdate can be converted to a suitable form and recycled.
