Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain ultrafine particles of Fe3O4 useful as magnetic fluid, by adding an alkali as a precipitant to an acidic solution containing a specific amount of Fe II ion based on Fe III ion.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali such as an aqueous solution of NaOH, etc. as a precipitant is added to an acidic solution containing 1.1W1.5 atom ion of Fe II based on 1 atom ion of Fe III. This suspension is heated at 50W70°C, and oxidized by introducing air. The solution is filtered and washed with water to give ultrafine particles of Fe3O4 having given particle diameters simply. By this process, a large amount of expensive ferric salt is not used, and there is no problem of treatment of waste liquor since no organic substance is used.
