Abstract
Prepn. of 4-(4-alkylphenyl) piperidines of formula R1-Ph-R2 (I) is carried out by decarboxylating the corresp. 4-(4-alkylphenyl) 4-piperidine carboxylic acids of formula R'1-Ph-R2 (II) (where R1 is a 1-R3-4-piperidyl gp.; R'1 is a 1-R3-4-carboxy-4-piperidyl gp.; R3 is H or lower alkyl; Ph is p-phenylene opt. substd. by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NO2 and/or halogen; R2 is lower alkyl, provided that R2 is not Me when Ph is unsubstd. and R3 is H). (I) are antidepressants (see also CH 634299). Decarboxylation of (II) may be effected by heating. The prods. can be converted to other cpds. (I) by standard methods, e.g. by treating (I; R3=alkyl) with a haloformate ester and hydrolysing the prod. to form (I; R3=H).
