Abstract

A light material, which is also a bad conductor of heat, is fire-resistant and has good mechanical properties, is made in the following stages. A liquid phenolic resol-type resin is mixed with 0-3 times its wt. of an inert material. 1-6 wt. % on the resin of a hardener is added, and mixed in a turbo-mixer for 15-50 seconds. The mixt. runs into a closed mould, 1-2 times the vol. of the mixt., and whose internal press. can reach 2 kg/cm2. This is held at ambient temp. and preff. for 0.5-10 minutes before introducing into an environment at 80-100 degrees C for 15-25 minutes. The hardened object is taken from the mould and held at 80-100 degrees C for 45-90 minutes. The material is useful for building purposes, in place of cement. Its physico-mechanical properties are surprisingly good, equalling the sum of the properties of reinforced concrete and expanded resins. It is easily worked, and can be used along or reinforced. Mechanical resistance is better than concrete (five times better in compression) and its density much less.
