Abstract

An ignition system for an engine incorporates a cylindrical tube open at one end and closed at the other, with a section reduced in dia. at the closed end. There are several segments projecting outwards near the closed end, an igniter in the section of reduced dia. and a charge in the tube. In the open end is a polyurethane foam wad and around the igniter a shock-absorbing ring of the same material. The tube itself is made of material e.g. 30% glass fibre and 70% Nylon (RTM). The charge consists of e.g. granules of nitrate of potassium and of boron, 3.175 mm dia., 4.775 mm long. The system is partic. intended for an engine with a jet-pipe having a single orifice, in which the ignition has to be at the rear, because of the isolated configuration of the head.
