Claims (7)

1. Compounds of the general formula wherein either (a) X and Y taken together represent an additional bond when Z represents an anilino or an alkoxy group; or (b) X is a hydrogen atom when Y and Z are both alkoxy groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
2. β-Anilino- -( 3 , , 5-triethoxybenz l )aerylonitrile .
3. A compound according to Claim 1 or 2 substantially as herein described with reference to any one of the foregoing Examples.
4. A method for the preparation of compounds of formula (I) in Claim 1 in which X and Y taken together represent an additional bond and Z represents an anilino group, which comprises (a) reacting a substituted benzoate of formula EtO 47921/2 - 16 - 3 wherein R is an alkyl group, with dimethyl sulphoxide or sulphone under strongly basic conditions, (b) reducing the C = 0 group to a -CHOH group, and then (c) reacting the hydrogenated product with a substituted propionitrile of formula CH2CN I (in) CH2-Z' where Z' is anilino,
5. A method according to Claim 4, for the preparation of the compound of Claim 2 of the structure wherein the compound of formula (III) used, is β-anilino-propionitrile .
6. A method for the preparation of compounds of formula (I) in Claim 1 in which X and Y taken together represent an additional bond and Z is an alkoxy group, which comprises reacting 3 » 4 , 5-triethd ybenzaldehyde with a β-alkoxypropio-nitrile.
7. A method for the preparation of compounds of formula (I) in Claim 1 in which X represents a hydrogen atom and Y and Z each represents an alkoxy group containing froia 1 to 4 carbon atoms, which comprises reacting 3,4,5,-triethoxybenzaldehyde with a 0-alkoxyacrylonitrile in the presence of an excess of alkoxide anion and then catalytically reducing the a- (3 , ,5-triethoxy-benzylidene)-β,0-dialkoxy-propionitriie thus formed, with hydrogen.
