Abstract
1396561 Bicycloalkane ketones SCHERING AG 12 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 27259/72 Heading C2C Novel compounds of the formula including their optical antipodes and racemates (wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each C 1-4 alkyl and n is 1 or 2) are prepared by ketalization of the corresponding triones with an appropriate alkanol R 3 OH, preferably in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The starting materials are prepared as follows Conversion of the chloro compounds to the triones is effected with concentrated H 2 SO 4 . The novel compounds have use in the preparation of cycloalkabenzopyran derivatives (see Specification 1,396,562).

Claims (8)
1. A process for the manufacture of a compound of the general formula I 1n which R-j, R2 and R3 each represents a lower alkyl group, wherein a compound of the general formula II 1n which and have the meanings given above, 1s ketal zed with a lower alcohol .
2. A process as claimed In claim 1, wherein the ketallzatlon s carried out 1n the presence of an addle catalyst.
3. A process as claimed 1n claim 2, wherein the acidic catalyst 1s a mineral add, a Lewis add, a sul phonic add or a phenol.
4. A process as claimed In any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the ketallzatlon 1s carried out 1n the presence of a water-binding agent.
5. A process as claimed In claim 4, wherein the water-binding agent 1s an orthoformlc add trial kyl ester.
6. A process as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the ketallzatlon is carried out at a temperature within the range of from -20° to +80°C,
7. A process as claimed 1n claim 6, conducted substantially as described In any one of Examples 1 to 4 herein.
8. A compound of the general formula I In which Rj, 2 and Rg each represents a lower alkyl group, whenever prepared by the process of claim 1. For the Applicants Wolff, Bregman and Goiler
