Abstract

The invention relates to the rolling of aluminum and, more particularly, lubrication for cold rolling. It is recommended to prelubricate aluminum before rolling, with mineral or synthetic oils, modified by additives, or with solutions or emulsions of said oils. The prelubrication avoids the formation of many surface defects during cold rolling. [FR2512702A1]

Description

Price 90p The invention relates to a lubricating method for use in cold processing aluminium and alloys thereof, and particularly in cold rolling into strips.
It is known that cold rolling of strips of aluminium has been carried out for many years, with lubrication by mineral or synthetic oil, with or without additives, thereby simultaneously lubricating and cooling the product and tools (rolls); the oil is generally paraffin oil; however, by reason (a) of the limited performance thus obtained (speed, cold rolling rate, etc.) and (b) of the dangers of ignition and fire, the oil has been replaced by an essentially aqueous medium, consisting of an emulsion or solution of oil in water, containing up to about 30% (by weight) of oil.
This method, which quite certainly leads to improved performance, is however limited by the appearance of surface flaws, which are found either in the form of longitudinal strips (parallel with the direction of rolling) varying in appearance and known as the zone of different mattness (z.d.m.), 5 or in the form of local flaws (halos, discontinuous flaws known as "flameches), or in the form of zones of different roughness (z.d.r.).
Applicants have found that it was possible to eliminate such flaws when cold processing is carried out on a prelubricated product, using a mineral or synthetic oil which may contain certain additives such as fatty acids, fatty • alcohols, fatty esters, fatty amines or amides, sulfur-containing or phosphorous organic products, wetting or anti-corrosion products, fatty substances of organic origin such as tallow, etc.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of lubricating during cold rolling of aluminium or its alloys in the form of 5 sheets or strips, wherein the product is prelubricated before deformation by a whole mineral and/or synthetic oil, possibly with additives, and the rolling tools, and eventually the product at the rolling stand, are lubricated with water or an aqueous lubricant. 2.
The prelubrication of the product before it is cold processed may result either from a specific operation or from a previous operation, the product of which is not degreased. In the first case the operation is carried out, either discontinuously or continuously, on the cold (or not cold) processing line, using any known arrangement such as spraying ramps (with or without air), an electrostatic device, a wiper soaked with oil, etc. The uniformity and even thickness of the layer of lubricant deposited, and its adhesion to the product, may be improved by known systems of brushes, felts, squeeze rollers, etc.
Lubrication in the cold deformation operation is effected with whole oil (or a mixture of oils), an emulsion or solution of oil in water or even water alone.
Under these conditions rolled strips without any surface flaws can be obtained, from strips 1n the annealed state (0) or in the cold rolled state (H), with reduction rates ranging from 50 to 90% in one pass and rolling speeds ranging from 500 to 1,000 m/mn, for thicknesses generally ranging from 15 to 0.15 mm.
Although the description of the Invention relates to cold rolling of strips, the method applies equally to cold rolling of other products such as bars, tubes, sheets, profiles, etc., or to other methods of cold deformation such as drawing or wire drawing.
The following examples illustrate the result obtained with the method of the invention as compared with prior art, in rolling strips of aluminium alloys (see table 1).
Prelubrication was effected by depositing a mixture of mineral oil and synthetic oil (5055-50% by weight) at the rate of a few grammes/m , sprinkling onto the two surfaces of the strip and wiping with squeeze rollers. Rolling proper was effected on a quarto single-housing rolling mill, with lubrication by sprinkling with an aqueous emulsion containing 105 by weight of oil: ACRA 75 A manufactured by FARBEST (1) 2319 L 17 manufactured by SHELL (2) The tests show that this method substantially increases the productivity of the rolling mill and at the same time gives rolled products with a very 35 good surface state. 3.
