Abstract

A method for feeding fish during salt-water breeding comprises supplying the fish in the breeding water with a feedstuff composition which is prepared by mixing fresh water, the amount of which depends on the temperature of the breeding water, with a dehydrated feedstuff in powder form and a vegetable- or animal-based binding agent, thus ensuring optimum fish- growth and development at different water temperatures.

Description

The present invention relates to a orocedure for feeding fish during salt-water breeding.
Two types of feedstuffs are in general use for this purpose. Firstly, so called wet feedstuffs consist of finely ground fresh, or frozen, fish with added vitamins and a binding agent which is mixed into a paste before feeding. Secondly, so called dry feedstuffs are fed to the fish in pellet form.
One disadvantage of wet feedstuffs, which contain 25-35« dry feedstuffs and 65-75% water, is the fact that a relatively high volume is needed to meet the nutritional requirements of the fish. The need for large storage capacity often makes it difficult to provide the high volume of wet feedstuffs needed for optimum fish-growth and development. Another disadvantage of wet feedstuffs is the fact that it easily freezes into solid lumps in winter. A disadvantage in summer is the food waste caused by crumbling.
The disadvantage of dry feedstuffs is the absence of water.
The fish therefore has to satisfy its need for fresh water by desalinating the salt water which it drinks. This physiological process works well at temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius, but is gradually less efficient - 2 47644 as the temperature decreases. Because of this physiological process, the growth and development of the fish is gradually reduced as the water temperature decreases, as this type of feed does not contain water.
It is the aim of the present invention to eliminate the above 5 mentioned disadvantages. The objective is achieved according to the invention by a procedure whereby the appropriate amount of fresh water to meet the needs of the fish at different temperatures is added to a mixing vessel containing dehydrated feedstuffs in powder form and a vegetable or animal based binding agent.
In order to give the feed-mixture a convenient shape and form, it may be put through a conventional mincer with the appropriate size perforations and an external rotating knife cutting the feed into appropriate lengths, so called pellets.
By using this invention, the fish breeder may by monitoring the temperature of the breeding water, produce pellets with the appropriate fresh water content and thus ensure optimum fish-growth and development at different water temperatures. Compared to wet feedstuffs which are presently used at low water temperatures, a feedstuff according to the invention will also reduce the cost of transport, storage, and feeding.

Claims (2)

1. A method for feeding fish during salt-water breeding which method comprises supplying the fish in the breeding water with a feedstuff composition prepared by mixing fresh water, in an amount 5 sufficient, depending on the temperature of the breeding water, to meet the needs of the fish, with a dehydrated feedstuff in powder form and a vegetable- or animal-based binding agent.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the feedstuff composition is added to the breeding water in the form of pellets.
