Description

The invention relates to lintels for use in spanning cavity walls.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a lintel for spanning an aperture in a cavity wall, comprising a first plate or part adapted to support a course or a plurality of courses of building blocks in an inner skin of the wall and a second plate or part spaced downwardly in use from tho first plate or part and adapted to support the load of a course of plurality of courses of building blocks in an outer skin of the wall, a member extending from or from near the front edge of the first plate or part to or to near the rear edge of the second ..plate inpart and adapted in use to span the cavity or part thereof in a generally downward direction, a further member which is spaced, in use, downwardly from the first plate or part and which spans the cavity and joins the member intermediate itslength so that in use the further member is above the second plate or part, and a support member extending from near or from near the rear edge of the first plate or part to join with the further member at or adjacent the rear edge of the further member. This arrangement is such that the first horizontal plate or part, the member, the support member and the further member define a hollow space.
The further member may comprise a Z-shape plate the web of which is secured to and lies generally parallel to the member. The web may be arcuate in configuration . t The support member{for tlie first plate or part may be integral with the further member.
The .support member foi· the first plate or part may be 5 integral with the first plate or part.
Four lintels embodying the invention are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 to 4 respectively shown end elevation of the four lintels.
All the lintels shown in the drawings, in which like parts are indicated by like reference numerals, are intended for use in cavity walls.
Referring to Figure 1, the lintel 30 has a first plate OF part 2 which is horizontal ond integral with a downwardly and forwardly (to the left in Figure l) inclined support or resistor plate 3 which terminates in a second plate or part 4 which is horizontal. The first support member 2 is supported by an integral substantially vertical support member 5 which joins a further member 6. The further 2θ member 6 is secured as by welding at 7 to the second horizontal plate or part 4, which terminates at its free edge in a lip 8.
The lintel shown in the Figures each have a step or rebate 31 in the further member 6. This member in Figures - 3 1, 3 and 4 is of generally lazy Z-shape so that the support member 5 is shorter than the overall vertical height of each lintel. The lintel 30 of Figure 1 has a support member 5 which terminates in a lip or flange 32 secured as hy welding at, to or adjacent one edge of the further member 6. The member 6 has an intermediate or web portion 33 of fhe lazy-Z which is substantially parallel to the inclined member 3, and a part or limb of the lazy-Z 3¾ which is secured as by welding at 7 to the second horizontal plate or part 4.
The lintel 40 of Figure 2 is similar to that of Figure. 3, except that the part 34 is omitted so that (the further member is of L-shape. The intermediate 33 part is then secured to the inclined member as by welding.
In Figure 3« the lintel 50 has a stepped further member 6 which is integral with the vertical support member, which terminates in a flange 9 secured as by welding to the first horizontal plate or part 2.
Referring now to Figure 4, the lintel 60 has a second horizontal plate or part 4 which comprises part of the further member 6. In a modification Of this lintel, not shown, the lintel is made in one piece, made rigid as by welding at or adjacent the lower part of the inclined member and the intermediate part of the further member. - 4 42924 All the lintels are preferably made from plate like material such as rolled mild steel. The lintels are substantially rigid so that imposed loads can be borne, and in use both the inclined members and the further g members span a cavity in a cavity wall.
The part 31 in the lintels of the Figures allows a frame or other member such as a window frame, to he received snugly in the lintel. Moreover, the part,i.e. the web of the Z or the shorter limb of the step may be of rounded or curved form to provide a seating for a nose-like part of the frame or other member. Xn every embodiment, mesh or other keying means may be incorporated on surfaces of the lintels intended to receive mortar, cement, plaster or the like. The inclined member 3 forms ]5 a damp resistor plate to ensure that moisture condensing in the cavity is directed towards the outer skin of a cavity wall.
Also, all the lintels define a hollow interior space in which no building bricks, blocks etc. are placed during building. The support member 5 maY itself be inclined slightly to the left or right as viewed in the drawings.
