1466399 Spinning and finishing yarns HOECHST AG 18 Feb 1974 [19 Feb 1973 (2)] 7326/74 Headings D1F and D1W In the manufacture of a smooth or bulky multifilament yarn having individual filaments ends protruding from the main body of the yarn, an undrawn or partially drawn yarn of spun filaments of a synthetic polymer material e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, polyolefins, polyacrylonitriles, celluloses and copolymers and derivatives thereof, at least some of which have "a bending- breaking-stress stability" of less than 1500 cycles -as measured by a described wirebending device, Fig. 4 (not shown)-is subjected to a bending and/or twisting stress acting transversely and sufficient to break these filaments at irregular intervals. The specified filaments may be mixed with filaments of greater "stability" e.g. in a ratio range of 7:3 to 3:7, which are not broken by the applied stress(es): Yarn may be stressed by turning it around a guide pin of small diameter and/or by twisting as in a false-twist texturing operation (perhaps combined with a drawing process) or by draw-twisting. The yarn may be after-treated to improve the filament bonding e.g. by at least temporarily interlacing the protruding ends by means of a gas jet or sizing. Component filaments in a yarn may differ as regards titre, cross-sectional form, colour, crimp potential, flame resistance and may be bi-filar. Fabrics knitted or woven from the yarn exhibit a marked resistance to pilling, Fig. 1 (not shown).
