1450536 Sustained release tablets containing lithium carbonate DELANDALE LABORATORIES Ltd 20 Nov 1973 54671/72 Addition to 1209093 Heading A5B Sustained release pharmaceutical tablets for the treatment of manic depressive states, comprising powdered lithium carbonate; a sustained release agent comprising a mixture of glyceryl mono-, di- and tri-esters of one or mere C 16-18 straight chain saturated fatty acids and one or more excipients, are prepared by coating a mixture of powdered lithium carbonate and one or more excipients with the sustained release agent, granulating the mixture using about (11.55 to 24.5 p) litres of water per 100 kg lithium carbonate where p is the bulk density of the lithium carbonate in grams per c.c., screening to form a granulate whose particles are all less than 12 BS Mesh, from 20 to 30% of which have particle sizes in the range of from 12 BS to 60 BS Mesh and from 70 to 80% of which have a particle size below 60 BS Mesh, and compressing the granulate into tablets. The tablets may comprise a filler e.g. mannitol, a binding agent e.g. gum acacia and a lubricant e.g. magnesium stearate. The tablets preferably contain 9.5 to 11.4 parts by weight of the mixture of glyceryl esters per 100 parts by weight of lithium carbonate. Preferably the sustained release agent is added in alcohol solution and at 68‹C or higher, the powdered lithium carbonate and filler being pre-heated to about this temperature before adding the solution.
