Abstract

1453697 Granulating detergent UNILEVER Ltd 17 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48420/72 Heading B5A Granules of a detergent formulation and having a size range of 0À3-3À0 mm. are produced by forming the component powders into a horizontal rotating bed in contact with a liquid binder in an apparatus comprising a roughened rotating table within a smooth walled cylinder, the liquid binder being released from a component during rotation by the rotational forces, e.g. either by temperature rise in the bed caused by friction, e.g. by decomposition of a hydrate or melt a low melting solid, or alternatively, by mechanical forces acting on a liquid/porous solid system where release is caused by rapid velocity changes of components in the bed. The formulation preferably contains 5-30% of a detergent active material and 5-30% of a detergency builder and may also contain 5-30% of an active oxygen releasing bleaching compound and other additives. A chemical reaction, e.g. neutralization may be effected between solid and liquid material used, during granulation. Various components of the formulation may be granulated in sequence to form layered granules.
