Abstract

1401420 Silage additive IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971 8 Feb 1972] 54949/71 and 5797/72 Heading A1F An additive for the conservation of forage crops during ensilage comprises a mixture of formalin and an inorganic acid where the ratio formalin/acid is between 1:1 and 9:1 and preferably between 1.4:1 and 7:1. The acid is selected, from hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric and sulphamic having a strength which is the acid equivalent of hydrochloric acid of molarity 4M minimum and improvement may be given by the addition of a quantity of this acid. The additive may' include a formaldehyde polymerisation inhibitor such as urea. The mixture is added to the forage crops in the proportion of 0.1 to 2% preferably 0.5 to 1% by weight. Practical quantities of 1/2 to 1 gallon of the mixture to 1 ton of crops are mentioned. [GB1401420A]
