Abstract
Foundry core compositions are produced by admixing (A) a mixture comprising 5 to 50 p.b.w. of furfuryl alcohol and 90 to 35 p.b.w. of a non-polymerized aqueous mixture of formaldehyde, urea and their equilibrium reaction products, the aqueous mixture containing a maximum of 15% by weight of water and (B) a mixture comprising 3,000 to 10,000 p.b.w. of sand, 1 to 3 p.b.w. of an acidic catalyst, and sufficient urea to give a molar ratio of total urea to formaldehyde in the compositions of 1:1,5 to 1:2,5. Mixture (B) may have added thereto 0,5 to 7,0 parts of 29% aqueous ammonia. Acid catalysts specified are ammonium chloride, ammonium trichloroacetate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate. When ammonium chloride is used aluminium stearate may be added. "Methocel" (Registered Trade Mark) carboxymethocel or guar gum may be added to mixture (B). Examples are given.
