Abstract

1405952 Chlorine RHONE-PROGIL 3 Oct 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 45489/72 Heading C1A Chlorine is prepared from a gaseous phase containing HCl by reacting the gas with a solid mixture comprising sodium chloride and iron oxide, the composition of the solid mixture being such that in the solid product obtained when equilibrium between the solid and gas phases is reached, the ratio of quantity of chlorine combined with iron to the quantity of chlorine combined with sodium is not higher than 1, and then reacting this solid product with an oxidizing agent to liberate chlorine. Preferably the ratio is not greater than 0À5. After reaction with the oxidizing agent, the ratio drops to from 0À01 to 0À1. The HCl gas phase may be reacted with the solid phase at 400‹ to 500‹ C., and the solid phase with the oxidizing agent at 450‹ to 600‹ C. The preferred oxidizing agent is oxygen. Before being contact with the HCl phase, the solid may be reacted with a reducing agent, e.g. a reducing gas. The solid mixture may contain an inert component, e.g. Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 . The solid mixture may contain Cu or a rare earth metal, and, may be treated as a fluidized bed, and may have a specified particle size. The gaseous HCl phase may be produced by the sublimation of ammonium chloride. [GB1405952A]
