1375571 Abrasive tools D H PROWSE & CO Ltd 11 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 35103/71 Heading B3D [Also in Division C4] An abrasive article comprises a sheet of abrasive-carrying material embedded in a backing material in a manner such that spaced portions only of the carrying material are exposed from the backing material on a surface of the article and having abrasive particles secured only to these exposed portions. The carrying material is preferably in sheet form having a discontinuous surface and may be flat or bent, for example into a tube or cylinder which is combined with the backing material. It may be metallic or non-metallic, flexible or rigid, perforated or imperforate, such as mesh or screen structures and expanded sheets. The backing may be flexible or rigid and may comprises a synthetic plastics or natural rubber. If the abrasive particles are to be electroplated to the carrying material, the backing should be non-conductive. Suitable materials are polypropylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene, styrene-acrylonitrile, nylon or fibre glass. A sheet of carrying material may be embedded in the backing member by extrusion or pressing, or the sheet may be coated with carrier by spraying or dipping, or they may be simply adhered. The surface of the article may require machining to expose the carrying material. Suitable abrasive particles are of diamond (natural or synthetic); cubic boron nitride, tungsten carbide, glass or sand. [GB1375571A]
