Abstract

1386674 Filaments containing enzymes SNAM PROGETTI SpA 21 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18743/72 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions B8 C2 and C3] Enzymes encased in filaments are prepared by dispersing the enzyme in a solution of a polymer capable of producing filaments, and wet or dry spinning the dispersion. Suitable polymers are nitrated or esterified cellulose polymers, polyolefins, homopolymers and copolymers of acrylates, methacrylates, vinyl esters, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and styrene, and polyamides. Enzymes for producing L-tryptophan from indole and serine in the presence of the enzyme-containing filament may be obtained from Escherichia coli, Claviceps, Neurospora, Bacillus subtilis or Saccharomyces. In examples, an enzyme derived from E. coli in a phosphate buffer solution or in aqueous glycerol was emulsified in a methylene chloride solution of cellulose triacetate, the emulsion was poured into a spinneret at 0‹ C., spun under a nitrogen atmosphere and coagulated in toluene to provide a filament which was then dried under vacuum.
