Abstract

1379752 Flame-resist treatment of polyamide fibres I W S NOMINEE CO Ltd 2 March 1972 [18 March 1971 1 April 1971] 7214/71 and 8412/71 Headings D1B and D1P Natural and synthetic polyamide fibres, e.g. wool, alpaca, cashmere, mohair, vicuna, guanaco, camel hair, silk, llama and nylon which may be associated with other fibres e.g. benzimidazole, phenolic, polyester, pvc, cotton, rayon, polyvinylidene chloride and modacrylic fibres and in the form of yarns, fabrics, carpets, garments or skins are rendered flame resistant by treatment with an aqueous solution of an anionic complex of zirconium with an organic chelating agent, e.g. citric tartaric or oxalic acid, or fluoride ions at an acid p.H. and if desired elevated temperature specified. Fluoride ion sources are ammonium bifluoride and fluoroborate ions. Specified zirconium compounds forming the complexes are zirconium acetate, oxychloride or sulphate or potassium zirconium fluoride which is itself an anion, a complex may be used. Other specified complexes are alkali metal and ammonium fluoro andchloro zirconates. The solution may also contain dyes, wetting agents, glaubers salt, formaldehyde acids and other flame retardants, e.g. antimony trifluoride, antimony potassium tartrate, aluminium sulphate and aluminium chloride. The flame proofing may be carried out at the same time as dyeing with acid levelling 1:1-premetallised and reactive dyes in the presence of organic non-ionic levelling agents. The dyeing process may also precede or come after the zirconium treatment e.g. with chrome dyes. The fibres may be bleached with H 2 O 2 on reductive bleach, e.g. sodium hydrosulphite or bisulphite bleach containing sodium silicate before or after zirconium treatment. Water and oil proofing agents e.g. fluorocarbon resins may be included in a bath prior to after or during zirconium treatment. The proofed material is dried and cured. [GB1379752A]
