Abstract
1372694 Flame-proofing textiles IWS NOMINEE CO Ltd 19 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970 29 Jan 1971] 50324/70 and 3516/71 Headings D1B and D1P Natural or synthetic polyamides e.g. nylon, wool, alpaca, cashmere, mohair, vicuna, guanaco, camel hair, or llama or blends thereof with polyester or cotton or each other are given flame resist properties by treatment with an aqueous solution or paste of a watersoluble complex formed from an organic chelating agent or fluoride ions in which titanium forms part of a complex anion. The complex may be formed in situ in the treating solution. Specified organic chelating agents are oxalic, citric and tartaric acid. Specified sources of fluoride ions are alkali metal and ammonium fluorides and bifluorides and sodium and ammonium fluoroborate. The complex is formed by reacting TiCl 4 with the complexing agents: A specified complex is potassium titanium oxalate. Other flame retardants e.g. Sb 2 F 3 , SbCl 3 antimony potassium tartrate and aluminium compounds e.g. Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and AlCl 3 water repellents e.g. fluorocarbon resins, dyes e.g. acid levelling, 1:1-premetallised and reactive dyes, foaming, thickening and wetting agents and HCI, formic and sulphuric acids for PH control may be added. Treatment may be carried out at 20-130C. Acid milling may be applied before flame resist treatment and chrome dyes after such treatment. Undyed wool is treated with an alkali metal or ammonium fluoride or bifluoride optionally with a reducing agent e.g. sodium metabisulphite or sodium form aldehyde sulphoxylate to remove discolouration due to the flame proofing treatment. The polyamide may be in the form of a yarn, fleece, noil, garment (woven or knitted) carpet or wool sheepskin. The flame resist process may also impart soil resist properties. Fluorocarbon resins applied are cured.
