Abstract

1312314 Coated particulate fertilizers ARMOUR HESS CHEMICALS Ltd 26 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 20134/70 Heading C1B [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A particulate fertilizer is melt-coated with a hydrophobic, anti-caking, anti-dusting composition comprising a wax-like substance or mixture of M.Pt. 40-120 C. and a nitrogencontaining cationic surfactant. The wax-like substance may be a paraffin, microcrystalline or natural wax, a stearic or hydroxystearic acidderived wax, a glyceride, a high-melting polymer, phenolic resin, polyolefin or polyamide, and the surfactant a nitrile RCN, amide RCONH 2 , amine, polyamine or etheramine RNH 2 , RRNH, R(CH 3 ) 2 N, RR(CH 3 )N, RCH- (NH 2 )CH 3 , R(NHR<SP>1</SP>) n NH 2 , R(C 6 H 5 )NH 2 or ROR<SP>1</SP>NH 2 , a non-aromatic cyclic amine, or a derivative of the foregoing, R being a C 8 -C 22 straight-chain aliphatic radical, R<SP>1</SP> a C 2 -C 4 alkyl radical, and n 1, 2, or 3. An amount of 0 01-1% by wt. of the coating is applied to the fertilizer, based on the fertilizer weight. The fertilizer may be of the high nutrient type or may consist of or comprise, calcium ammonium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, urea or a mono- or di-ammonium phosphate and may be in the form of prills, granules or spheroids, or crystalline. Optional additives to the coating are solubilizers, e.g. aliphatic nitriles, spreading agents, e.g. ethoxylated fatty acids, diluents, e.g. hydrocarbon oils, and dyes or brighteners, e.g. Rhodamine B or Photine EB.
