Abstract

1315778 Diamonds UKRAINSKY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY KONSTRUKTORSKO - TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT SINTETICHESKIKH SVERKHTVERDYKH MATERIALOV I INSTRUMENTA GOSPLANA UKRAINSKOI SSR 12 Aug 1971 [12 Aug 1970 17 Nov 1970(2)] 37938/71 Heading C1A Diamonds are made by subjecting carbon, preferably graphite, or a material capable of yielding free carbon under the reaction conditions, in contact with a compound of In, Tl, Ga, Ba, Be or an alkali metal to a temperature of at least 1800‹ C. and a pressure corresponding to this temperature within the range of diamond stability as defined in the graphite/diamond equilibrium system. The contact may arise by (1) forming a homogeneous mix of the carbon material and one or more of the compounds, (2) placing discs of the carbon material and of the compounds alternately in the reactor, or (3) disposing the compounds adjacent the ends of the reactor. Exemplified compounds in the form of a mix with graphite, preferably of spectral purity are Tl 2 O, Tl 2 CO 3 , In 2 O, Ga 2 O, a mixture of Tl 2 O and Tl 2 CO 3 , BaCO 3 , BeCO 3 , BeO, a mixture of BaO and BaCO 3 , LiO 2 , Li 2 CO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 O, K 2 CO 3 , K 2 O, a mixture of Li 2 O and Li 2 CO 3 , and Li 2 C 2 . The reaction is effected in conventional apparatus and the temperature in the reactor controlled by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of metals under pressure in the reactor.
