Abstract

1400534 Synthesis of diamond EDENVALE ENG WORKS (PTY) Ltd 7 Sept 1972 41592/72 Heading C1A Synthetic diamonds are made by subjecting a carbon containing composition to conditions of temperature and pressure below the Berman- Simon Line so as to cause decomposition of the material to release carbon atoms or groups thereof and effect conversion of the released carbon atoms or groups of atoms into diamond, the carbon-composition being free of covalent carbon-hydrogen bonds and being a carbon compound or a residual compound obtained by heat and/or chemical treatment of a carbon compound. Perhalohydrocarbons particularly chlorine compounds are exemplified, and chloranil is also suggested. A getter for the halogen gas, e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal may be present in the composition. The preferred getter is lithium. The temperature and pressure used may be below 2000‹ C. and 100 kilobars respectively. The composition is preably brought to the desired conditions in a series of steps.
