Abstract

<PICT:0984194/C1/1> Synthetic diamonds containing boron and/or aluminium are produced by reacting under conditions of high pressure and temperature, e.g. above 50,000 atmospheres and above 1200 DEG C., a non-diamond carbonaceous material; a metal catalyst consisting of one or more of the metals of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, chromium, manganese, or tantalum; and boron and/or aluminium, or a material which decomposes or reacts under the reaction conditions to provide at least one of these elements. The boron is preferably present in the reaction mixture in an amount not exceeding 20% by weight of the graphite and the aluminium in an amount not exceeding 25% by weight of the graphite. The diamonds produced are electrically conductive and may be coloured. Their resistivity at room temperature is from 104 to 107 ohm cm. for diamonds containing boron and 105 to 2.107 ohm cm. for diamonds containing aluminium. The colour for diamonds containing boron varies from light blue to deep purple and the aluminium containing diamonds are white. The apparatus and technique used may be that disclosed in Specifications 830,743 and 830,210, or the pressure vessel in these may be replaced by the vessel illustrated in the Figure which comprises a pyrophyllite cylinder 51 of about 5/32 of an inch wall thickness and 3/4 of an inch outside diameter. Concentrically within this is the graphite heating tube 52, and a further cylinder 53 of alumina. The graphite charge, containing also boron and aluminium, is placed in metal catalyst tube 55 which is then positioned centrally within cylinder 53. Plugs of alumina 56 and 561 (not shown) fit in the ends of the tube 52 to enclose the graphite charge and the catalyst. Suitable end discs 57 are provided to convey the current to tube 52. This type of reaction vessel provides an indirect heating of the sample via the graphite tube.
