Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture porous carbon products consisting of fine carbon particles and combined fine carbon particles which are excellent in physical and chemical properties by thermally decomposing a mixture of organic compounds having different structures under the condition of high temperature and high pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of a graphitizable organic compound, e.g., anthracene, and a hard-to-graphitize organic compound, e.g., biphenyl, in a specific proportion is enclosed in a metal container, and then the metal container is heated at 300W1,000°C, particularly 500W800°C, and under a pressure of 500W5,000kg/ cm2, particularly 700W2,000kg/cm2, in a pressure container, e.g., autoclave, to carbonize it until the raw material organic compounds are completely decomposed. Thus, porous carbon products consisting of fine carbon particles and combined fine carbon particles which are excellent in hardness can be obtained in high yield.
