Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily perform metal-containing sludge treatment using metal reduction by carbon while obtaining by-product of carbide by a method wherein organic sludge containing metal is solidified by quick lime and sparked by carbon electrode.
CONSTITUTION: When quick-lime is added to metal-containing organic sludge, much heat generates due to the reaction with water in the organic sludge. The heat causes water-containing organic materials to be dehydrated, dried, and solidified. The solidified sludge is piled in the form of column, and hole is drilled in the center to conduct sparking by carbon electrode. The spark produces very high temperature to permit the solid sludge to be melted from the center, producing carbide. As such, metal-containing reduction by carbon facilitates the treatment of metal-containing organic sludge, yielding additional carbide formation.
