Abstract

1334944 Yarn crimping JOSEPH BANCROFT & SONS CO 25 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 16968/71 Heading D1F A method of crimping yarn comprises feeding yarn through a nip formed by a pair of feed rolls against a surface of a conveyor belt extending along the nip, and advancing the crimped yarn by means of the conveyor belt to a setting zone. In a first apparatus, Fig. 2, a yarn 70 is fed through a nip between two rolls 11 to be crimped in a chamber confined by the rolls, plate 37 and belt 40 moving between, and possibly contacting, the rolls. The crimped yarn 71 is advanced and held compacted in channel 33 by belt 40 while being heated by heater block 30. The yarn is then cooled, the belt possibly being extended to hold the yarn compact in the cooling zone. Back pressure is imparted to the belt at the crimping chamber by a weighted element 60, which may be a roll. Element 60 may have a low-friction surface, e.g. of polytetrafluoroethylene, sliding on the belt. The size of the crimping chamber may be adjusted by raising or lowering the belt, which may also be pivoted upwards. The belt may be provided, on its yarn-contacting surface, with recessed portions, and with projecting pins, and may have a circular cross-sectional shape. The rolls 11 may be maintained in pressure contact. In a modification, the yarn is fed downwardly through a nip onto a belt, e.g. a wire, which carries the crimped yarn, uncompacted, under heaters, e.g. infra-red heaters, and through a cooling zone. In a second apparatus, Fig. 8, yarn 120 is fed through a nip between two rolls 111 to be crimped in a chamber 106 confined by the rolls, the plate 114 and belt 101. Crimped yarn is advanced by belt 101 over transfer bridge 125 to be advanced over heater 137 by and between belts 101, 122. Belt 122 may be mounted on, e.g. four pulleys. The yarn may be advanced through channel 131, whose floor may back belt 122. Bridge 125 has a slot through which the crimped yarn is advanced. Seals are secured to plate 114 and bridge 125 to wipe the end faces of rolls 111. In a third apparatus, Fig. 15, yarn 207 is fed through a nip between rolls 210, 211 to be crimped in a chamber confined by the rolls, plate 213 and belt 201. The crimped yarn is advanced by and between belt 201 and oppositely rotating, oppositely threaded screw members 216, 217. A fixed member, along which the crimped yarn is advanced, may be disposed in the nip formed by the screw members. The ends of the screw members adjacent the rolls may be supported in the rolls, or in a transfer bridge interposed between the rolls and the screw members. [GB1334944A]
