[Also in Division G1] A process of detecting and/or locating and sealing leaks in a vessel or a piping system comprises the steps of filling the vessel or system with an inert gas such as nitrogen, helium or carbon dioxide under pressure and containing an indicant which is observable when the gas escapes. The indicant may produce a visible coloured smoke on escape or be arranged to phosphoresce in the dark or fluoresce under ultraviolet light, or it may be arranged to provide a heat reaction which is detected by infra-red detectors. In another embodiment the indicant as it escapes may be used to seal the leak and are normally gaseous or metal hydrides, metal alkyls, metal alkyl halides, and metal alkyl hydrides. Many examples of sealant and indicant are given and the prior art refers to the use of radioactive tracers and gas tracers such as helium, hydrogen and freon. [GB1258266A]
