Abstract
1275558 Shaped article of porous mineral and insecticide UCB SA 23 Sept 1969 [26 Sept 1968] 45818/68 Heading A5E An article with insecticidal properties comprises a block or sheet of a solid porous mineral support composed of mineral particles artificially agglomerated by means of a mineral binder, which is impregnated with an organophosphorus insecticide having the general formula (RO) 2 P(X)(OM) in which R is alkyl, X is oxygen or sulphur, M is a radical of the structure -C(R')=C(Z) 2 or -C(R')(Z)-C(Z) 3 or -C(R')=C(R")-C(O)OR in which R' is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, Z is a halogen atom and R" is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl radical, the mineral support being inert with regard to the insecticide under the conditions under which the article is used for combatting insects. The agglomerated support may be based on a siliceous, aluminius, silico-aluminous, silico-calco-aluminous, silicacalcarcous, calco-aluminous or calcarcous material. Specific porous solid supports are an artificial porous calcium silica-aluminate agglomerate produced from lime and fly ash from thermal power stations and powdered aluminium; an autoclaved or naturally aged porous asbestos-cement agglomerate; or a porous asbestos-silica agglomerate which may have a porosity of 68%, pores of an average dimension of about 500 and a specific surface area of 32sq. metres/gram. constituted by the amosite or chrysotile variety of asbetos and calcium silicate. A particularly preferred organo-phosphorus compound used is dimethyl- 2, 2-dichlorovinyl phosphate (D.D.V.P.) and mixtures of insecticides may be used. In addition there may be present a substance which acts as a regulator of the vapour pressure of the insecticide and/or as a water-repellent agent. Such a material which may be added in an amount up to 40% by weight may be a mineral oil, a chlorinated diphenyl, a chlorinated polyphenyl or a silicone oil. The porous article may also be coated with a water-repellent polymer film which may be polyethylene. The article is preferably acidified with an aqueous solution of any organic or inorganic acid so that it has a pH within the range 5 to 7. The article is produced by impregnating a block of the porous support with the insecticide, either by total or partial immersion of the support in the insecticide, by bringing the support into contact with insecticide vapour by spraying, or by depositing the insecticide in a cavity of the support. Preferably the support is first freed of residual mixture by heating at 30-500C or placing in a high vacuum.
