Abstract
1,234,286. Extruding. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB. 4 Oct., 1968 [6 Oct., 1967], No. 47185/68. Heading B3P. A press for hydrostatic extrusion of a billet comprises a press stand, a cylindrical high pressure chamber filled with liquid, a die 19 having at least one extrusion opening, a piston 5 which, when moved into the pressure chamber, generates the necessary hydrostatic pressure to extrude a billet 6 inserted in the chamber, and a billet holder, and is characterized in that the billet holder comprises a movable piston 1 dividing the pressure chamber into two spaces 3 and 4, which piston on the side 8 facing the billet is shaped to centre and clamp the billet 6 and is provided with overflow channels 9 and 10 which, at a certain pressure difference between opposite sides of the piston 1, allows liquid to flow from the space 3 between the pressure-generating piston 5 and the billet holder to the space 4 between the billet holder and the die 19. In operation the piston 5 and cylinder 2 are in their left-hand end positions (see Fig. 2) and a billet 6 and the die 19 are moved by the holder mechanism 59 to a position opposite the space 4 in the cylinder 2. The cylinder 2 is then displaced to the right by operating cylinder 22 (to the position shown in Fig. 3) and a pressure medium is introduced into the space 3 through the conduit 39. The billet holder 1 is moved to the right so that its conical surface 8 engages the billet 6, which in turn presses against the die 19 which is moved against the support 18 with a force which is limited by the opening of valve means 11. The holder 40 is then withdrawn. The cylinder 2 and piston 5 are displaced simultaneously to the right until the cylinder contacts the support 18. The pressure generating piston 5 is then moved to the right and extrusion commences, the billet being held in the correct position by the liquid pressure and the holder 1 now releases the billet (see Fig. 7). The piston 5 and cylinder 2 are then moved simultaneously back to their left-hand end positions and the die 19 with the remnants of the billet is displaced to the left. A crosscutting saw 51 is then moved forward and cuts the rod 48 close to the die 19.
