Abstract

Esters of unsaturated alcohols are prepared by oxidizing an olefine <FORM:0999894/C2/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl radicals or hydrogen atoms, in a suspension or solution containing carboxylate ions, a carboxylic acid, a platinum group, metal or metal compound catalyst, and water in a concentration of up to 25% by volume, at above atmospheric pressure. Propylene or ethylene and acetic or propionic acid are mentioned and platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium or iridium are the platinum group metals. The carboxylate ion may correspond to the acid, and be added in the form of an alkali or alkaline earth, or copper salt, or be formed in situ by the addition of a base such as alkali metal or alkaline earth metal base or a tert. amine. The oxidation may be by molecular oxygen, e.g. as air, and/or by use of a redox system such as a ferric/ferrous or cupric/cuprous system. Additional polar solvents such as dimethyl formamide or acetonitrile may be used and the process may be continuous. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate with acetaldehyde as by-product.
