Abstract
Acetate esters of unsaturated alcohols are prepared by reacting an olefine of the general formula <FORM:0928739/IV(a)/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl radicals o hydrogen atoms, under substantially anhydrous conditions with a suspension or solution of a mixture of salts, containing acetate, halide and cupric radicals, in acetic acid in the presence of a palladium-containing catalyst. Ethylene and propylene are preferred olefines and the palladium-containing catalyst may be palladium metal or a palladium salt. The process is preferably carried out in the presence, in the mixture of salts, of another metal radical such as an aluminium or zinc radical, on alkali metal radical such as sodium or an alkaline earth metal radical such as barium. Specified salts are sodium and copper acetates, and cupric, sodium, aluminium, zinc and barium chlorides. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate and a mixture of n-propenyl and isopropenyl acetates.
