Abstract

Vinyl acetate and acetic acid are prepared by reacting ethylene and a molecular oxygen containing gas with a mixture containing acetic acid, acetate ions, a platinum group metal catalyst and a cobalt or manganese salt. A redox system, e.g. a ferric/ferrous or a cupric/cuprous system may be present and then the process may be in two stages. In the first stage ethylene is reacted with a mixture of acetic acid, acetate ions, the redox system, the platinum group and oxidation catalyst, and in the second stage after removal of the vinyl acetate and acetaldehyde recycle, the mixture is contacted with oxygen-containing gas and returned to the first stage. Platinum metal or palladous chloride or acetate may be used and the acetate ions may be derived from alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or copper salts.
