Abstract
The invention provides a method for reducing vat and sulphur dyes in which the reducing medium contains a water-soluble alkali metal boron hydride, an alkaline reagent (acid-acceptor) and a aldehyde sulphoxylate. The alkaline reagent may be an organic base, alkali metal hydroxides, or alkaline salts e.g. alkali metal carbonates. Preferably the sulphoxylates are those of aldehydes having 1-4 carbon atoms e.g. formaldehyde and are used as 1-100 parts per 1000 parts of aqueous preparation. Boron hydride is used generally as 1-10% of the aldehyde sulphoxylate. The reduction may take place with the aid of a metal catalyst e.g. nickel or cobalt or organic catalyst e.g. quinone compounds at less than 60 DEG C otherwise reduction is at temperature above 60 DEG C preferably 80-100 DEG C.
