Abstract
In a process for the production of Ag, Cu, Ni or Co by reacting an aqueous solution of a salt of the required metal with a sulphur-free reducing gas at a temperature above 100 DEG C. and under a partial pressure of reducing gas above 3 atmospheres, at least 0,01 gram per litre of a compound selected from the group anthraquinone, substituted anthraquinones, benzoquinone, naphthaquinone, ortho- and para-polyhydric phenols, tannic acid and morin is added to the solution which is heated to reaction temperature before reaction with the reducing gas. Preferably the amount of addition agent is 0,02-1 gram per litre and the reaction is conducted at 150-300 DEG C. under a partial pressure of reducing gas within the range 6-35 atmospheres. A neutralizing agent, e.g. sodium hydroxide or ammonia, is provided in the solution either initially or during the course of the reaction to keep the pH within the range 2-9. An additional catalyst, e.g. ferrous sulphate, chromous acetate or ultra fine silica, may be provided in the solution. The process may also be used to coat finely divided particles or large bodies present in the solution. These may be of metals, alloys, metal carbides, oxides or nitrides, diamonds, graphite, silicon, glass, phosphorus or plastics.
