Abstract

Procedure for the treatment of metal-bearing intermediate materials, containing (a) one or more metals chosen from nickel, cobalt and cobra; (b) sulfur in the sulfide state, in an amount less than that required to stoichiometrically combine with said metals as sulfates and, optionally, (c) one or more precious metals chosen from palladium, platinum, silver and gold; characterized in that it comprises the steps of forming a slurry of finely divided particles of said materials in a substantially ammonia-free aqueous solution, containing in solution from approximately 25 to 300 g/l of at least one sulfate salt chosen from ammonium sulfate, sulfate sodium and nickel sulfate; adjust the pH of the aqueous slurry to a value within the range of approximately 4.5 to 6.5 and react the slurry, under a positive partial pressure of oxygen, with a gas containing free oxygen, at a temperature between 80 and approximately 180ºC; continuing said reaction to convert said group (a) metals to hydroxide; cool the thus reacted slurry below 100ºC and reduce the pressure to atmospheric; adding sulfuric acid to the cooled slurry in an amount sufficient to lower the pH of the slurry to about 3 to 4.5 and stirring said acid-treated slurry to dissolve said group (a) metal hydroxides in the solution and separating the dissolved metal-containing group (a) solution from said acid-treated slurry.
