999,507. Reciprocating pumps. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS Ltd. Nov. 8, 1961 [Nov. 11, 1960], No. 38845/60. Heading F1A. [Also in Division F2] An insert member is received in a space between the inter-connecting guiding bores for two sliding members to prevent rotation of the sliding members in the bores. In a fuel injectionpump two cylindrical tappets 19, 21 slide in part cylindrical bores 17, 18 in a casing 11. The tappets are actuated by cams 15, 16, acting through roller followers 28 carried on bushes 27 on roller pins 26, to reciprocate pump plungers 32 seating on pads 31 in hollow upper ends of the tappets. The plungers 32 may be rotated through collars 34 to vary pump delivery. The outside of the lower part of each tappet 19, 21 is formed with parallel flat surfaces 25 which engage with a T-shaped insert 42 held in a cruciform aperture 43 formed in the interconnecting wall between the bores 17, 18 to prevent rotation of the tappets. The upper part 46 of the aperture 43 is made narrower than the lower part 44 to prevent the insert being assembled upside-down. Embodiments are described in which an odd number of tappets are used and in such constructions the sides of the insert 42 may be grooved to allow the same length of roller pin 26 to be used in all tappets.
