In a device for improving the backwash effect in the wet treatment part of a backwasher, in at least one liquor container, there are arranged at least two guide rollers and in between every two guide rollers there is provided at least one deflecting roller which serves as a pressure roller. In the embodiment shown material 1 is introduced between pressing rollers 7, 8; over a deflecting roller 10 into bath 4 containing liquid 3. In the bath there are a number of guide rollers 2 having pressing rollers 6 in contact therewith. A deflecting roller 9 which serves also as a squeezing roller conducts the material from the one guide roller 2 to the next. The guide rollers may have a smooth surface or the surface may be perforated, liquid being drawn into or expelled from such guide rollers. The pressing rollers may also be smooth surfaced or perforated or they may be provided with uneven portions. The material passing out of bath 4 passes through squeeze rollers 7a, 8a and the liquid squeezed from the material passes via. guide means 12 into a filter 15 and thence into container 16. A circulating pump 13 conveys the liquid through pipe 18 to pipe 18a and thence into bath 4 or alternatively the pipe 18a may be connected into one of the guide rollers 2. The material may pass into a further bath 4a and there may be further baths following that. Replenishing liquid is supplied via. float 14a from flushing tank 14 which ensures the supply of the requisite amount of liquor. In an alternative arrangement the overflow edge 11 of bath 4 may be made adjustable.
