Abstract
A flux composition, for joining aluminium to the dis-similar metals Fe, Ni, Cu, Cr, Zn and alloys thereof, e.g. stainless or chrome steel, brass, and "Monel" (Registered Trade Mark), by the tungsten inert gas shielded arc welding method, comprises by weight 3/4 -2\ba1/2 parts SnCl2, 1/2 -1\ba1/2 parts ZnCl2 and 1 1/2 -5 parts finely divided lead, preferably of 100-300 A.S. mesh particle size. The SnCl2 content, which may be added as SnCl2.2H2O, may be from 12-45% by weight of the composition. The composition may be applied to the dis-similar metal by painting from an aqueous paste containing 10-50% by weight water. The flux may also be used for joining aluminium alloys containing, e.g., 12% Si or 1-2% Mg.
