Abstract
The granules of a submerged arc welding flux contain coarse particles of size 16 to 60 mesh B.S. of a constituent containing an element to be alloyed with the weld metal and finer particles of the remaining constituents of the flux. Preferably, the coarse particles have a size of 20 to 30 mesh B.S. and consist of a ferro-alloy of manganese, chromium or molybdenum, and the finer particles have a size of 80 to 100 mesh B.S. and consist of a mixture of magnesium silicate and aluminium silicate with or without fluorspar. The examples disclose compositions containing, apart from the alloying metal, (1) serpentine, ball clay and fluorspar, and (2) serpentine, ball clay, sand and calcium hydroxide. The flux may be made by the rolling method disclosed in Specification 863,280, the coarse particles thereby becoming coated with the finer particles.
