Abstract

417,195. Uniting by fusion. ROBERTS, A. J., and MUREX WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd., Ferry Lane Works, Forest Road, Walthamstow, London. March 31, 1933, No. 9782. [Class 83 (iv).] An arc welding electrode or welding rod is provided with a flux coating containing titanium dioxide and a subdivided metal corresponding in nature to the parts to be welded. For iron and steel subdivided iron is used, for alloy steels one or more of the alloying elements, and for copper, copper with or without a small proportion of phosphorus and/or silicon. The subdivided iron may be obtained by the thermal decomposition of iron carbonyl or may be in the form of filings preferably with a minimum carbon content. The rest of the coating may consist of finely divided silica in the form of powdered silica rock, Kieselguhr or chemically prepared silica, mineral or synthetic silicates and oxides or carbonates of calcium, barium, aluminium, vanadium, manganese, iron, zirconium, and uranium. The physical properties of the deposited weld metal may be varied by including in the coating silicon, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, or nickel as pure metals or as alloys, e.g. ferro-manganese. They may be used in finely divided form, or certain of the metals, e.g. nickel, may be applied as a plating on the core instead of or in addition to including them in the flux. The coating is mixed with a siccative such as an alkali metal silicate or a gum, glue, synthetic resin &c. One example consists of 15 per cent of titanium dioxide, 25 per cent of iron powder, 50 per cent of mineral silicates and 10 per cent of calcium carbonate, a second consists of 15 per cent of titanium dioxide, 40 per cent of iron power, 25 per cent of precipitated silica and 20 per cent of 90 per cent ferromanganese, and a third consists of 70 per cent of titanium dioxide, 10 per cent of iron powder, 14 per cent of precipitated silica, 4 per cent of manganese or ferromanganese and 2 per cent of nickel.
