Abstract

999,339. Counterbalanced doors. WESTLAND ENGINEERS Ltd. Feb. 13, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No. 8853/63. Heading E2M. A tension spring counterbalance system for an "up-and-over" door incorporates a pulley system for reducing movement of the spring, the spring system being assembled above and parallel to the lintel of the door opening and connected by a cable to the door via the pulley system. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 2, the door is counterbalanced by means of two tension springs 15, 12, each anchored at one end 14 and at the other connected to a spring pulley 11. Two flexible cables, one for each spring, are each secured at 13 and pass over one spring pulley 11 and over one guide pulley 8, the other end being secured to one stub axle 2 of the door. In operation when the door is closed the tension springs 12, 15 are extended but as the door 1 is opened the springs 12, 15 contract and the stub axles 2 rise in the vertical tracks 3 causing the door, with the aid of the radius arm 5, to tilt about an axis through the stub axles. The movement of the free ends of the spring during the opening and closing motion is reduced in comparison to the cable 9 in the ratio of 1:2, by incorporating the spring pulley 11 in the system. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the counterbalance system may have one spring 23 and one continuous flexible cable 9 passing over two movable pulleys 11a, 11b connected to the spring, two fixed guide pulleys and a compensating pulley 25, the ends of the cord being each secured to one stub axle 2.
