Abstract

1,2,3,4,6,7 - Hexahydro - 2 - oxo - 11bH -benzo[a]quinolizines and 1,2,3,4,6,7,12,12b-octahydro - 2 - oxoindolo[2,3-a]quinolizines, represented by the general formula <FORM:0999095/C2/1> (wherein R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen atom or a methoxy or ethoxy group or jointly represent a methylenedioxy group, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl group, and X = X represents an ethylene or pyrrole residue completing with the two adjacent rings an isoquinoline or b -carboline skeleton), are prepared by condensing a 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline or 3,4-dihydro-b -carbolin of the general formula <FORM:0999095/C2/2> with an acid addition or quaternary salt of a Mannich base derived from a secondary amine, formaldehyde and a ketonic compound of the general formula R3CH2COCH3 or R3CH(COOH).COCH3. The products may be purified by way of their oxime hydrochlorides. Specification 908,966 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 789,789 and 845,098.
