Abstract

998,591. Silencers for gaseous currents. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 28, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 36869/62. Heading F1B [Also in Division H2] An exhaust silencer for a gas blast circuit breaker of the type described in Specification 842,986 comprises an exhaust passage 40 discharging the gases into an expansion chamber 69 with concentric spaced walls 65, 66 formed with openings 75, 76 through which the exhaust gases escape, there being a greater number of smaller holes in the outer cylinder 66, and containing a semi-toroidal deflector plate 56. A pair of porous cylinders 67, e.g. loosely woven cellulose fibres surround the wall 66 and the space therebetween is filled with compacted copper wool 79. The outer surface of the silencer is protected by louvres 85. The deflector plate 56, which is mounted on a shock absorbent rubber buffer 60, is of high thermal conductivity metal such as copper and may have a roughened surface to aid heat absorbtion. A similar deflector 51 is provided at the other end of chamber 69. A heat exchanger (not shown) may be mounted in the chamber 69. An intermediate cylinder may be inserted between 65, 66.
