Abstract
998,414. Piled carpets. BIGELOW-SANDFORD Inc. Aug. 23, 1961 [Sept. 30, 1960; Oct. 4, 1960], No. 30468/61. Headings D1E and D1K. A modified Axminster carpet (Fig. 10) has tufts 97,99 which are looped under adjacent double wefts 82, 88 and are raised between the wefts to form uncut loops between the tufts. The uncut loops may be of different heights in a row, alternate tuft insertions of a spool may be omitted, the next insertion also having alternate tufts omitted to blend into the gaps left by the first insertion and the tube frames may be moved weftwise so that the tufts and loops may be staggered weftwise. Clutches 48 (Figs. 4, 9) are pivoted upwards about 39 are moved inwards about 40 to grip the spools, are moved downwards about 39 and simultaneously tilted by an arm 78 to wipe-in tufts 22. The spools are then moved rearwardly and tilted so that the first double wefts 82 may be inserted. The spools are then raised, the shed changed and the weft beaten-up. A comb 84 is then raised and the above procedure repeated to form the loops 86 and tufts 99 about the next double weft 88. The tufts 99 are severed and a further double pick 92 inserted before the cycle recommences.
