Abstract

The invention comprises polyanhydrides and copolyanhydrides containing repeating units of formula <FORM:0998356/C3/1> In the copolyanhydrides the molecules may contain anhydride residues of other naphthalene dicarboxylic acids, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, benzophenone-4 : 41-dicarboxylic acid or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. In an example, naphthalene-2 : 6-dicarboxylic acid is heated with acetic anhydride to obtain the mixed anhydride of naphthalene - 2 : 6 - dicarboxylic acid and acetic acid, and this is heated at reduced pressure to obtain the polymer. Other methods of preparing the polymers are mentioned. Specifications 840,846 and 840,847 are referred to.
