Abstract
998,315. Tubular heat exchangers; surface condensers. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Jan. 15, 1963 [Feb. 28, 1962], No. 7848/62. Heading F4S. A gas containing metallic vapour is cooled in a heat exchanger comprising a casing 1 through which the gas flows, and a bank of concentrically coiled cooling tubes extending through the casing and forming at the gas outlet end of the casing a condensing region 10 in which gas velocity is reduced to permit condensation of metal vapour from the gas. As shown, the wall of the condensing section 10 contains a metal screen 13 on which the vapour condenses, the gas flowing through the screen to a gas outlet header the wall 12 of which is embraced by cooling tubes 11 (Fig. 2, not shown). The apparatus is intended for use particularly for the recovery of heat from gases leaving an M.H.D. generator, the recovered heat being used to heat gases passing through the tubes 2 to the generator.
