Abstract
998, 312. Photo-electric measurement. STAMICARBON N.V. Oct. 13, 1961 [Oct. 13, 1960], No. 36926/61. Heading G1A. The invention relates to a method of and apparatus for determining the swelling properties of coal during coking and is concerned with measuring photo-electrically the cross-sectional area in a number of planes of a coke button allowed to swell freely during the coking process. In one arrangement (not shown) the coke button is disposed between a number of light sources, acting in different planes, and their associated photoelectric elements. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 1) the coke button is placed in a transparent or apertured or translucent container 43 which is rotated perpendicular to a parallel beam of light from a source 46 received by the photo-cell 47. In each case the output of the cell or cells gives a measure of the volume of the coke button. Fig. 1 also shows means for investigating a sequence of samples comprising a rotary carrier with four radial arms spaced at 90 degree intervals, each arm carrying a crucible 1, 2, 3, 4, the crucibles being automatically moved in succession to four stations I, II, III, IV. At station I the crucible is filled with a coal sample. At Station II the sample is carbonised in a furnace 5 which allows the coal to swell freely. At station III the crucible is pneumatically emptied, the sample being transferred to the measuring apparatus which comprises a transparent carrier 43 which is rotated in a parallel beam of light received by a photo-cell 47. At station IV the crucible is blown clean.
