In a method of determining the ash content of coal the dispersion capacity for Roentgen rays of greater than 1.74 Š.U. and less than 4.5 Š is measured. The dispersion may be measured by a single photo-electric device responding to the dispersed radiation if the incident rays have a constant intensity. If not, a second detector may be provided for the incident beam or the beam may be detected alternately by the same detector. If measurements are made on a continuous stream of the fluctuation the ash content may be used to control coal cleaning operation by change-absorption capacity between samples or by comparison of successive samples with a standard.
