Abstract
1350554 Detecting fission products COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 12 Jan 1972 [22 Jan 1971] 1516/72 Heading G1A A method of detection of fission products comprises the electrical collection of such products on both sides of a very thin surface metallized disc of polyester insulating material, which is placed at the centre of a spherical chamber enclosing the sample under test and in which radio-active ions have been permitted to form, and the subsequent measurement of radio activity emanating from the disc by two detectors arranged to receive emanation in the entire solid angle surrounding the disc. An automatic apparatus Fig. 1, in which a disc extracted from a rotating carrier 1 is fed between two closely spaced parallel semi-conductor detectors 4 of the same area as the disc to measure residual activity, is then fed to the centre of spherical sample chamber 3, is returned to the measuring position, and is then extracted and replaced by a new disc. The arrangement may include retractable beta screens 17 on each side of the measuring device whereby gamma, and beta + gamma measurements may be obtained. An inactive gas may be used to sweep the detector and repel gas from the sample chamber, and the readings may be calibrated by the insertion of a standard disc.
